Volleyball World Records Across Eight Categories

Compare volleyball records for serve speed, aces, set scores, marathons, attendance and Olympic achievements—with each record’s scope explained.
Volleyball records measure very different things: ball speed, points, playing time, crowds and titles. The key is to keep the category attached to the number. A Guinness endurance record is not the longest competitive match, and a Volleyball Nations League record is not automatically an all-competition world record.
Records and benchmarks at a glance
The Guinness entries below reflect its public listings as of 6 November 2026; Guinness cautions that record updates are not immediately published online. Competition-specific and historical benchmarks are labeled separately rather than presented as universal records.
| Category | Mark | Holder and date | What the record covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor volleyball marathon | 101 hours | SVU Volleybal, Amstelveen, Netherlands; 2–6 January 2017 | Guinness-listed longest marathon playing volleyball indoors—not a normal tournament match. Guinness |
| Women’s volleyball attendance | 92,003 spectators | Nebraska–Omaha, Lincoln, USA; 30 August 2023 | Guinness-listed largest attendance at a women’s volleyball match, staged in Memorial Stadium. Guinness |
| International indoor set score | 66–64, totaling 130 points | Germany over Italy, FIPAV Cup Men Elite; August 2026 | CEV reported it as the longest set ever in international competition; VolleyTimes also reported the score. CEV, VolleyTimes |
| Men’s VNL serve-speed benchmark | 135.6 km/h | Wilfredo León, Poland against Serbia; 29 May 2021 | Reported by Volleyball World as the fastest VNL serve at the time—not proof of the fastest serve across every competition. Volleyball World |
| Men’s VNL single-match aces benchmark | 13 aces | Wilfredo León, same Poland–Serbia match | A VNL record when established; the official box score confirms 13 serve points. Volleyball World report, box score |
| Consecutive volleyball passes, female pair | 3,002 passes | Ashlyn Brush and Katelyn Westover, Weiser, Idaho, USA; 23 August 2014 | Guinness’s female-pair category; they passed back and forth for 1 hour 5 minutes. Guinness |
| Men’s individual Olympic indoor medals | 4 medals each | Samuele Papi, Sergey Tetyukhin and Sérgio Santos; achieved across Games from 1996–2016 | Guinness-listed record for total medals, not gold medals alone. Guinness |
| Women’s beach Olympic title streak | 3 consecutive gold medals | Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings; 2004, 2008 and 2012 | Their historic run comprised 21 straight Olympic match wins, with just one set lost. Olympics |
What scoring records actually count
A 66–64 set contains 130 combined scoreboard points. Germany’s 66 is a team score, not one player’s individual total.
That score is possible because FIVB indoor sets, other than the fifth, require at least 25 points and a two-point lead. At 64–64, a team must reach 66–64 to finish; 65–64 is insufficient. There is no fixed upper score in that rule. Fifth sets use the same two-point requirement but begin with a target of 15. FIVB rules, sections 6.2–6.3
Beach volleyball has different starting targets: its first two sets go to 21, and a deciding third goes to 15, all win by two. Indoor and beach score records therefore need separate labels. FIVB beach rules
Individual scoring is another category again. In León’s 2021 match, his 26 points were 13 attack points plus 13 serve points, with no block points. Poland’s team total was 97, including points credited to other players and opponent errors. His ace count and total scoring count describe the same performance, but they are not interchangeable. Time, contacts and medals need different comparisons
The 101-hour marathon measures an organized endurance attempt. The 3,002-pass record measures consecutive passes between two participants. Neither establishes the longest rally played between opposing teams in a competitive match. For those distinctions, see our guides to the longest volleyball game and longest volleyball rally.
Likewise, Olympic medal totals and title streaks answer different questions. Guinness lists Papi’s four medals as two silvers and two bronzes, Tetyukhin’s as one gold, one silver and two bronzes, and Santos’s as two golds and two silvers. Equal medal totals do not mean equal gold totals. Guinness medal breakdown
How to read a “world record” claim
Before comparing two numbers, check the discipline, sex category, competition, unit and date. For serve speeds, also look for the measurement source; a reported speed alone does not establish an all-format record. Our fastest volleyball serve guide separates the competing claims.
The useful record is the one with a defined boundary: most aces in a VNL match, most consecutive passes by a female pair, or largest crowd at a women’s volleyball match. Removing those words changes the claim.
