Germany’s 66–64 Set Against Italy Produced 130 Points

Germany’s 66–64 set against Italy produced 130 points. See the 299-point match total, why FIVB indoor scores have no cap, and other record claims.
A standout documented high-scoring indoor volleyball set is Germany’s 66–64 win over Italy in August 2026: 130 combined points. It came in the opening set of the FIPAV Cup Men Elite in Reggio Calabria. The European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) described it as the longest set ever played in international competition—a duration claim, not a separately verified world scoring record. Italy nevertheless won the match 3–2. CEV match report
The distinction matters: “highest scoring volleyball game” can mean one set, sometimes called a game, or the whole match. It can also mean one team’s points rather than both teams’ combined score. The figures below concern indoor volleyball and reporting available as of October 7, 2026; they do not establish a universal record across every competition and scoring era.
The 66–64 set—and the 299-point match
Germany scored 66 points and Italy 64 in the opener. That is 130 scoreboard points in one set, not 130 points for the winning team.
Italy then won three of the remaining four sets. Using the final sequence in CEV’s report and the Italian federation’s opening result summary, the full match adds up as follows. FIPAV match report
| Set | Italy | Germany | Combined points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 64 | 66 | 130 |
| 2 | 25 | 22 | 47 |
| 3 | 23 | 25 | 48 |
| 4 | 25 | 22 | 47 |
| 5 | 15 | 12 | 27 |
| Match total | 152 | 147 | 299 |
Those totals are calculated from the published set scores. They establish 299 points for this match, not an all-competition world record for total match points.
The opening set alone accounted for about 43.5% of the match’s points: 130 ÷ 299. Yet winning that enormous set still gave Germany only a 1–0 lead in sets. Match victory depends on sets won, not the cumulative point margin.
How can a set reach 66 points?
Under the standard FIVB indoor rules, the first four sets are played to at least 25 points, with a two-point lead required. At 24–24, play continues until one team leads by two. There is no upper score cap in that rule. A deciding fifth set has a target of 15, also win by two. FIVB rules 2025–2028, Rules 6.2–6.3
For example, at 64–64:
- Germany’s next point makes it 65–64: set point, but not victory.
- Another German point makes it 66–64: the required two-point lead.
- An Italian point instead would make it 65–65, and play would continue.
A 24–24 score contains 48 combined points. Reaching 66–64 therefore adds 82 more scoreboard points after that tie. This is why repeated ties can push a set far beyond its nominal target. For the underlying system, see how volleyball scoring works.
Why other answers appear
56–54 is a widely reported older benchmark. FIVB’s historical review cites reports identifying Korean Air Jumbos’ third-set win over Rush & Cash on November 26, 2013, as the rally-scoring high at the time: 110 combined points. Germany–Italy’s 130-point set exceeds that by 20. The same review labels the much larger 87–85 claim from a 1979 Czechoslovak league match as unconfirmed and places it in the old side-out scoring era; it should not be presented as a verified record. FIVB historical comparison
48–46 is the NCAA benchmark reported in 2026. UCLA beat Ohio State by that score in the second set on January 29, producing 94 combined points. NCAA.com reported it as an NCAA record, and Ohio State’s match report corroborates the score. It is a college record claim, not an international one. NCAA report · Ohio State report
Finally, highest scoring is not the same as longest lasting. Points measure the scoreboard; duration also includes rally length and interruptions. For time-based records, see longest volleyball game.
