When an Attack Becomes a Kill—and When It Does Not

Use a two-part test: was the contact an attack, and did it directly end the rally with a point? If both are true, it is generally a kill.

The short answer: a kill is a point-scoring attack

A kill in volleyball is credited when a qualifying attack immediately produces a point for the attacking team and ends the rally. In a box score, kills are commonly abbreviated K.

The important word is attack. A kill is not simply any action that wins a point, nor is it a particular hitting technique. It is the statistical outcome of an attack. The WIAA Volleyball Statistics Guide defines an attack as an attempt to send the ball toward the opponent’s side and identifies a kill, an attack error, and a zero attack as its three possible outcomes.

In practical terms, an attack is a contact directed over the net with the intent to score. It might be a hard swing, soft tip, roll shot, setter dump, or another strategically directed ball. Statistical guides can differ in how they classify unusual contacts, so intent and the applicable recording standard matter at the margins.

Consider a basic rally:

  1. The pass reaches the setter.
  2. The setter delivers the ball to an outside hitter.
  3. The hitter attacks inside the opponent’s court.
  4. The defense cannot keep the ball in play.

The attacking team wins the rally and receives the point. The hitter receives a kill in the individual statistics. Because the setter directly supplied the ball for the scoring attack, the setter will normally receive an assist.

That distinction between the team result and the individual statistic is essential. Winning a rally produces a team point, but not every point is a kill. An untouched winning serve is a service ace. A blocker who immediately returns an opposing attack for a point receives block credit. A rotation fault or another opponent violation may create a team point without creating an individual kill.

A useful beginner’s test is:

  • Was the contact classified as an attack?
  • Did that attack directly end the rally with a point for the attacking team?

If the answer to both questions is yes, the play will generally be recorded as a kill.

What kinds of attacks can count as kills?

A kill does not have to be a powerful spike. Force, speed, and dramatic appearance do not determine the statistic. A lightly struck dink can be just as much of a kill as a ball driven sharply to the floor.

What matters is whether the contact qualifies as an attack and whether it immediately scores. The Nebraska School Activities Association recording guide expressly notes that force does not determine whether a ball is a kill and gives a lightly struck dink as an example.

A spike and a kill are not synonyms

A spike describes how a player attacks the ball. A kill describes the result of that attack.

A spike can become:

  • a kill if it immediately scores;
  • an attack error if it goes out untouched, hits the antenna, or is blocked down for an immediate opposing point; or
  • a nonterminal attempt if the defense digs it and the rally continues.

The same logic applies to a tip, roll shot, or dump. Each term describes a method of attacking. None guarantees a kill.

Tips, roll shots, and dinks

Soft attacks are often directed into spaces that the defense has left open. A hitter may tip over the block, roll the ball into a deep corner, or place a dink into the middle of the court. If the contact qualifies as an attack and the defense cannot keep it in play, the attacker receives a kill.

This is why “hardest hit” and “best statistical outcome” are different ideas. A hard spike dug cleanly is not a kill. A carefully placed tip that drops untouched is.

Setter dumps

A setter dump usually occurs when the setter sends the second team contact over the net instead of setting a teammate. If that contact is an intentional attack and immediately produces a point, the setter receives the kill. The Junior Volleyball Association’s statistics overview specifically treats a point-scoring setter dump as an attack kill.

The setter does not receive an assist on the same play. An assist requires a pass, set, or dig that leads directly to a teammate’s kill. When the setter attacks and scores, the setter is the hitter for statistical purposes.

Attacking off the block

A ball does not have to land untouched to be a kill. Hitters often try to tool the block by attacking a blocker’s hands so the deflection travels out of bounds or into an area the defense cannot cover.

If the attack touches an attempted block and then lands out of bounds, the attacker can receive a kill. The same normally applies when the deflection lands on the defending team’s court and cannot be played. The relevant statistical point is that the attack produced the terminal block deflection; this should not be confused with separate rules governing team contacts after a block.

This is one meaning of the informal phrase “putting the ball away.” The attacker has ended the rally with the attack. The phrase is useful shorthand, but the formal question remains whether the attack directly produced the point.

A kill is not the same as every point a team scores

A team point and an individual kill are related, but they are not interchangeable. A kill is only one way to win a rally.

The principal point-producing categories include:

  • Kill: A qualifying attack directly scores.
  • Service ace: A serve directly scores.
  • Scoring block: A block immediately returns an attack for a point.
  • Opponent violation or error: The team receives a point, but individual statistical credit depends on the cause of the violation and the applicable recording guide.

Major League Volleyball’s published definitions treat kills, service aces, and blocks as separate scoring categories. Its guide defines a kill as an attack resulting in an immediate point and calculates total player points by adding kills, service aces, and blocks rather than treating all scoring actions as kills. Kill versus ace

A serve may be fast, aggressively directed, and impossible to return, but it remains a serve. If it directly produces a point, the result is a service ace, not a kill.

Both actions contribute to the team’s score, but the box score separates them because they measure different skills and occur in different phases of play.

Kill versus block

When a blocker immediately sends an opponent’s attack back to the floor for a point, the defending player receives block credit. The blocker does not receive a kill because the contact is classified as a block rather than an attack.

A block touch that does not end the rally is not a scoring block. If the ball remains playable, the rally continues and no block point has been recorded.

Kill versus attack error

An attack error is the negative terminal outcome of an attack. Instead of winning the point, the attack directly gives the point to the opposing team.

Examples can include:

  • hitting out of bounds without a block touch;
  • hitting the antenna;
  • attacking into the net in a way that ends the rally;
  • being blocked for an immediate opposing point; or
  • committing a qualifying violation during the attack.

The precise criteria depend on the recording standard, but the central contrast is stable: a kill directly benefits the attacker’s team, while an attack error directly costs that team the rally.

Block contact creates an important distinction. If an attack touches an attempted block and then goes out, the attacker can receive a kill. If the attack goes out without a block touch, it is generally an attack error.

Kill versus a continuing attack

Suppose a hitter drives the ball cross-court and a defender makes a controlled dig. The hitter made an attack attempt, but the attack did not produce a kill because play continued. It also did not produce an attack error because the opponent did not immediately receive the point.

Statisticians commonly classify that result as a zero attack or nonterminal attack attempt. A later event in the rally may produce a kill, block, or error, but it does not retroactively turn the earlier attack into a kill.

Not every opponent mistake creates kill credit. The point must be attributable to a qualifying attack under the applicable statistical guidance. An unrelated rotation fault or violation later in an extended rally should not automatically be assigned to an earlier hitter as a kill.

Kill, attack attempt, attack error, or zero attack?

Once a contact has been classified as an attack attempt, its result falls into one of three broad categories:

  1. Kill: The attack immediately gives the attacking team the point.
  2. Attack error: The attack immediately gives the opposing team the point.
  3. Zero attack: The ball is controlled or otherwise stays in play, so the attack does not immediately score for either team.

A zero attack does not mean the hitter did nothing useful. The shot may force the opponent out of system, create a difficult return, or contribute to a point later in the rally. “Zero” means only that this particular attack was neither a kill nor an error.

Every credited kill is also an attack attempt. The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association uses K for kills and ATT for attack attempts and instructs statisticians to award an attack attempt whenever a kill is recorded. Its definitions distinguish kills, errors, and attempts.

A three-rally recording example

Imagine the same hitter takes one attack in each of three rallies.

Rally 1: In-bounds tip

The hitter tips over the block, and the ball lands on the floor.

  • Record: K
  • Also included in: ATT
  • Running result: one kill on one attack attempt

Rally 2: Attack dug successfully

The hitter swings, but a back-row defender controls the ball and the rally continues.

  • Record: ATT only
  • More precisely: a zero or nonterminal attack
  • Running result: no additional kill or attack error

Rally 3: Untouched attack out of bounds

The hitter attacks past the sideline without a block touch.

  • Record: E
  • Also included in: ATT
  • Running result: one attack error

Across the sequence, the hitter has one kill, one attack error, and three total attack attempts. The remaining attempt is the zero attack from Rally 2.

Why attempts and errors matter

Kill totals measure scoring volume, not complete attacking efficiency. Two hitters can finish with the same number of kills while producing very different performances.

One hitter might reach that total with relatively few attempts and errors. Another might need many more attacks and commit several errors. Their kill totals match, but the opportunities used and points lost do not.

Attempts provide opportunity context: how often did the player attack? Errors provide cost context: how often did those attacks directly give away points? Hitting percentage combines all three elements.

For stat keepers, consistency matters more than whether every close decision feels intuitively perfect. Choose the match’s applicable statistical standard before play begins, classify attacks according to that standard, and avoid switching between formal categories and informal impressions midway through the match.

How kills relate to assists

A kill and an assist often appear on the same rally, but they are credited to different players.

A teammate normally receives an assist when that player passes, sets, or digs the ball directly to the attacker who records the kill. The familiar sequence is:

  1. The setter sets an outside hitter.
  2. The outside hitter attacks.
  3. The attack immediately scores.
  4. The hitter receives a kill.
  5. The setter receives an assist.

An assist depends on the next attacker receiving a kill. A well-placed set followed by a dug attack does not create an assist. Neither does a set followed by an attack error.

The South Dakota statistical guidelines define an assist as a pass to a teammate who attacks for a kill and note that an assist can come from a dig when the attack follows on the next team contact. The credited player therefore does not always have to be the designated setter.

Can a first contact become an assist?

Yes, under recording systems that award an assist for any qualifying pass, set, or dig directly leading to a teammate’s kill.

For example:

  • A defender digs an attack.
  • A teammate attacks that dig on the next team contact.
  • The attack immediately scores.

The defender may receive both a dig and an assist, while the attacking teammate receives the kill.

Why a scoring setter contact is not an assist

Suppose the setter intends to set an attacker but sends the ball over the net, where it lands for a point. If the contact is classified as an attack, the setter may receive a kill. The setter does not receive an assist for assisting themself.

The same applies to a deliberate setter dump. The setter is the attacker and kill recipient, not the assisting player.

Unassisted kills

An unassisted kill is a kill scored without a qualifying setup from a teammate immediately preceding it.

A common example begins with an opponent’s overpass:

  1. Team B’s pass or dig crosses the net unintentionally.
  2. A front-row player on Team A attacks it directly.
  3. The ball lands for a point.

The Team A player receives a kill, but no Team A teammate set up the attack. Under systems that track the distinction, it is an unassisted kill.

The Nebraska recording guide provides a useful accuracy check: when assisted and unassisted kills are classified consistently, total assists should equal total kills minus unassisted kills. Every kill is therefore paired with an assist or classified as unassisted under that convention.

That relationship explains why a team can have fewer assists than kills. Kills scored directly from opponent overpasses or other balls not set up by a teammate add to the kill total without adding an assist.

Reading kills in a volleyball box score

Depending on the competition or statistics platform, a volleyball box score may use labels such as:

  • K: Kills
  • E: Attack errors
  • ATT or TA: Total attack attempts
  • K%: Kill percentage
  • H%: Hitting percentage, attack percentage, or hitting efficiency
  • K/S: Kills per set

Not every box score includes every measure, and abbreviations can vary. Consult the specific box-score legend when available.

Total kills

Total kills count the attacks credited with immediately producing points. If a player has 14 K, that player recorded 14 point-scoring attacks.

The number does not reveal how many attempts the player needed or how many attack errors the player committed. It measures production, but not complete efficiency.

Kill percentage

Kill percentage measures the share of attack attempts that became kills:

Kill percentage = kills ÷ attack attempts

With 10 kills on 16 attempts:

10 ÷ 16 = .625

The player’s kill percentage is .625, or 62.5%. This formula is listed in the Major League Volleyball and OHSVCA statistical definitions.

Hitting percentage

Hitting percentage, also called attack percentage or hitting efficiency in some systems, subtracts attack errors before dividing by attempts:

Hitting percentage = (kills − attack errors) ÷ attack attempts

With 10 kills, 2 errors, and 16 attempts:

(10 − 2) ÷ 16 = 8 ÷ 16 = .500

The player’s hitting percentage is .500. The South Dakota guidelines provide this same numerical example.

Kill percentage and hitting percentage are not interchangeable

In that example:

  • Kill percentage: .625
  • Hitting percentage: .500

Kill percentage asks, “What share of this player’s attempts became kills?”

Hitting percentage asks, “After subtracting the attacks that directly cost the team points, how efficient was the player across all attempts?”

Because hitting percentage penalizes attack errors, it provides information that kill percentage does not. Two hitters can have identical kill percentages but different hitting percentages if one commits more errors.

Kills per set

Kills per set places a player’s kill total in the context of playing time:

Kills per set = total kills ÷ sets played

A player with 20 kills across four sets averages 5 kills per set. The kills-per-set calculation follows the Major League Volleyball statistical definition.

Why raw kill totals need context

A player with more kills may simply have received more sets and taken more swings. To interpret the total, consider:

  • attack attempts;
  • attack errors;
  • kill percentage;
  • hitting percentage;
  • sets played; and
  • the player’s offensive role.

Kills also should not be combined mentally with all other scoring actions. That calculation reinforces that the three are separate statistical categories even though each contributes to the team’s score.

Edge cases: free balls, overpasses, sets, digs, and blocking violations

The broad definition of a kill is stable: a qualifying attack directly produces a point. The difficult part is deciding whether an unusual contact qualifies as an attack in the first place.

The detailed conventions discussed here come primarily from cited indoor-oriented high school, association, and professional statistical guides. They should not be assumed to govern every collegiate, professional, recreational, or beach-volleyball competition. Free balls that score

A free ball is generally sent across the net to keep play alive rather than as a conventional attack. If it unexpectedly lands for a point, its treatment can depend on the recording system.

The South Dakota page’s AVCA-attributed guidance awards a kill when a free ball crosses the net and lands on the floor. The Nebraska guide likewise says that an overpass or free ball that crosses the net and scores is credited as a kill to the player who sent it over.

The appearance of the play is not decisive. A slowly traveling ball can still receive kill credit under a guide that classifies the contact as a point-scoring attack.

A ball sent over only to avoid four hits

The WIAA guide takes care to distinguish an attack from a ball sent over solely to avoid a four-hit violation. Under that standard, the desperation contact is not recorded as an attack attempt. Without an attack attempt, it cannot become a statistical kill.

This creates a real difference in emphasis among the supplied guides:

  • The Nebraska and South Dakota guidance allows specified point-scoring free balls to receive kill credit.
  • The WIAA guidance first asks whether the player was attempting to attack or merely avoiding a four-hit violation.

The practical solution is not to force every guide into one universal rule. Statisticians should identify the governing standard and apply its definition of an attack consistently.

Sets and digs that cross the net

The AVCA-attributed guidance published by the South Dakota association credits certain sets and dig attempts that cross the net and land for points as kills.

The scorer should not classify a contact solely by the player’s usual role. A setter can attack, and a defensive contact can travel over the net and score. The relevant questions are whether the applicable manual classifies that contact as an attack and whether it directly ends the rally.

Overpasses

An overpass occurs when a pass or defensive contact crosses the net before another teammate plays it. Two different statistical outcomes are possible:

  • If the overpass itself crosses the net and scores, the player who sent it over may receive a kill under a guide that classifies the contact that way.
  • If an opponent attacks the overpass directly for a point, that opponent receives the kill.

The second situation is the classic unassisted-kill example. Because the attacker received the ball from the opposing team rather than through a qualifying setup from a teammate, no teammate receives an assist.

Attacks deflected out by the block

An attempted block does not prevent kill credit when the touch sends the attacked ball out of bounds. The attacker’s play produced the terminal deflection, so the attacker can receive a kill.

This differs from a stuff block. If the defender blocks the attack directly back onto the attacker’s court for a point, the defender receives block credit and the attacker may be charged with an attack error.

Officially called blocking violations

Under some organization-specific guidance, an attacker may receive a kill when the attack directly causes an officially called blocking error, including specified net or centerline violations. The attack is treated as the action that produced the point.

Poor blocking form or an unsuccessful block is not automatically a statistical blocking error. NCAA-oriented guidance published by the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association distinguishes an official blocking-error call from a block that merely sends the ball out of bounds: the former can produce kill credit under that guidance, while the latter is scored as a kill for the attacker without necessarily charging a blocking error. For beginning stat keepers, the safest procedure is:

  1. Identify the governing body or reporting system before the match.
  2. Confirm how its manual defines an attack.
  3. Determine how it treats free balls, sets, digs, and overpasses.
  4. Record officially called violations rather than inferring them from technique.
  5. Apply the same standard throughout the match.

The final practical test remains simple: first determine whether the contact qualifies as an attack, then ask whether it directly ended the rally with a point for the attacking team. If both are true, the player will generally receive a kill and an attack attempt. If a teammate directly set up the scoring attack, that teammate will normally receive an assist.

Soft shots can be kills. Aces and scoring blocks remain separate statistics. For unusual contacts, the applicable statistics manual—not the apparent force or style of the play—should decide the classification.
