When a Serve Counts as an Ace—and When It Does Not

An ace directly scores from the serve; receiver contact still qualifies when the ball cannot be kept in play. Examples separate aces, errors and live rallies.
An ace, formally called a service ace, is a serve that directly scores for the serving team. The server receives statistical credit, and the team receives one rally point. A legal serve landing untouched in the opponent’s court is the clearest example, but contact does not rule out an ace: a touched serve can qualify if the receiving team cannot keep it in play, as reflected in published volleyball statistical guidelines.
An ace is a serve that directly scores
The defining feature of an ace is the outcome. The serve itself must produce the point, rather than merely create an advantage for the serving team.
Imagine a legal serve landing inside the back corner of the opponent’s court without touching a player. The rally ends immediately, the serving team scores, and the server is credited with an ace.
That untouched result is sometimes called a no-touch ace, but it is not the only kind. A serve may also be an ace when a receiver contacts the ball but the receiving team cannot make a playable continuation.
An ace should not be confused with every point won while a particular player is serving. If the receiving team controls the serve and keeps the ball in play, the original serve is not credited as an ace. The rest of the rally is recorded according to the applicable statistical rules.
A touched serve can still be an ace
Receiver contact does not automatically prevent an ace. The important question is whether the receiving team can keep the ball in play after that contact.
Suppose a passer reaches the serve but deflects it toward the stands, where no teammate can make a legal play on the ball. The serve has directly ended the rally, so it can be recorded as an ace even though the receiver touched it.
Now change the outcome: the passer shanks the serve toward the sideline, but a teammate reaches it legally and keeps the rally alive. In that case, the serve is not an ace. It may have forced a poor reception, but the point was not scored directly from the serve.
A practical test is:
Did the serve directly produce the point, or did it merely make the next play difficult?
This test also prevents an ace from being awarded too early. A reception may initially look unplayable but still be recovered. The classification becomes clear when the receiving team either continues the rally or fails to keep the ball in play.
Quick guide: ace, service error, or continuing rally?
A serve can end immediately as an ace or service error, or it can begin a continuing rally. Under the 2022 NCAA Volleyball Statisticians’ Manual, a serve that is neither an ace nor an error is recorded as a zero serve.

A zero serve does not mean the rally is worth zero points. It means only that the serve itself has been recorded as neither an ace nor an error. The rally continues until a later play or fault decides it.
Speed, power, placement, and difficulty do not determine the classification by themselves. A hard jump serve that is controlled is not an ace. A slower serve that lands untouched in bounds is.
How aces appear in NCAA statistics
This section is NCAA-specific and follows the conventions in the NCAA’s 2022 statistics manual. It should not be treated as a universal statement about every league, governing body, or competition.
Under that manual, each serve is classified as a service ace, service error, or zero serve. Every service ace also has a corresponding reception error. That error is assigned to an individual receiver when responsibility can be identified, or to the receiving team when individual responsibility cannot be determined. The receiving team’s final reception-error total must equal the opponent’s service-ace total under these NCAA compilation rules.
The NCAA definition is broader than the familiar image of a ball striking the court untouched. The 2022 manual also permits an ace to be awarded for certain receiving violations and a receiving-team rotation fault during the serve sequence.
Borderline plays require careful classification. A bad pass that remains playable is not automatically an ace or reception error. An overpass is not an ace merely because the serving team later attacks it for a point. Once the receiving team keeps the serve in play, the later result must be evaluated separately.
Because these details concern statistical recording rather than just the everyday meaning of “ace,” the relevant competition manual should control. A league using different statistical conventions may classify unusual faults differently.
Any legal serve style can produce an ace
An ace does not have to come from a particular serving technique. Common styles include:
- Float serve: Struck with little or no spin.
These categories can overlap. A server may use a jump float or a jump topspin serve, for example.
No technique is automatically an ace. A powerful jump serve is not an ace if the opponent controls it and continues the rally. A standing float serve can be an ace if it lands untouched or deflects beyond recovery. The statistical result depends on what the serve accomplishes, not how fast, forceful, or dramatic it looks.
The rule of thumb is straightforward: an untouched serve landing in bounds is clearly an ace, and a touched serve can also qualify if the receiving team cannot keep it in play. If the rally continues, the serve is not an ace; for receiving faults, rotation faults, and other unusual situations, consult the competition’s applicable statistics manual.
