Japan Women’s Volleyball: Recent Results and Historic Medals

Japan’s women’s volleyball team: recent VNL, Olympic and World Championship finishes, key players, historic medals and a worked match-score example.
Japan’s senior women’s indoor volleyball team is known as Hinotori Nippon and appears as JPN on international scoreboards. Its recent achievements include VNL silver in 2024, while its Olympic history began with gold at Tokyo 1964.
Recent results: Olympics, VNL and World Championship
These are separate competitions, so a VNL placing should not be read as an Olympic finish or a world ranking. Here are selected results as of 3 November 2026.
| Competition | Japan’s final placing | How the campaign ended |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) | Silver — 2nd | Beat Brazil 3–2 in the semifinal, then lost the final 1–3 to Italy. Results |
| Paris 2024 Olympics | 9th | Finished pool play with one win and two losses; did not reach the quarterfinals. Standings |
| 2025 VNL | 4th | Lost the semifinal 2–3 to Brazil and the bronze-medal match 1–3 to Poland. Results |
| 2025 World Championship | 4th | Lost the bronze-medal match 2–3 to Brazil, with the deciding set ending 16–18. Match report |
| 2026 VNL | 7th | Went 8–4 in the preliminary phase, then lost the quarterfinal 1–3 to Brazil. Standings |
The distinction between preliminary and final placing matters. In the 2026 VNL standings, Japan stood sixth after the preliminary phase, but the official final classification placed it seventh after the knockout round. Those numbers describe different stages, not conflicting results.
Coach and players to recognize
Ferhat Akbas is listed as Japan’s coach on the official 2026 VNL roster. Appointed in February 2025 to succeed Masayoshi Manabe, he became the team’s first foreign head coach, with the appointment focused on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle. Appointment announcement
Names to recognize include outside hitters Mayu Ishikawa and Yoshino Sato. In Japan’s 2025 World Championship bronze-medal match, Sato scored 34 points and Ishikawa scored 23.
The 2026 VNL roster also lists Ishikawa and Sato as outside hitters, Seki and Sakae as setters, and Kojima, Iwasawa and Fukudome as liberos. Nanami Seki’s official player profile confirms her setter role.
Treat that as a competition-specific roster, not a permanent national-team lineup.
Japan’s Olympic and world medals
Japan won the first women’s Olympic volleyball tournament at Tokyo 1964, then added another gold at Montreal 1976. Its six Olympic medals are:
- Gold: 1964, 1976
- Silver: 1968, 1972
- Bronze: 1984, 2012
The IOC’s account of the 1964 team records all six medal editions. London 2012 remains Japan’s most recent Olympic podium finish.
At the women’s World Championship, Japan won three titles: 1962, 1967 and 1974. It also took silver in 1960, 1970 and 1978, and bronze in 2010. These are World Championship medals, not World Cup results. Official historical honours
Reading a Japan match score and box score
Japan’s quarterfinal against Brazil on 22 July 2026 provides a useful example. Written from Japan’s perspective, the result was:
Japan lost 1–3: 26–24, 22–25, 16–25, 20–25.
Japan won the opening set; Brazil won the next three. The 1–3 is the set count, not the rally-point total. Adding the set scores gives Japan 84 points and Brazil 99, matching the official match statistics.
Japan’s 84 points break down as:
56 attack points + 8 block points + 5 serve points + 15 opponent-error points = 84.
Those scoring categories count points, not every contact with the ball. An attack point is a kill; a block point is a rally-ending block; a serve point is an ace. For example, if Japan saves an attack, sets the ball and then scores a kill, that sequence produces one scoreboard point, not three. Defensive saves and setting actions help create the scoring opportunity but are not extra points to add to the total.
